Algonquin artist Frank Polson has created a striking image of a full moon low on the horizon, casting its light behind a tree in the peak of its summer growth. To the left, a cluster of four ripe raspberries is depicted in vibrant red. Sharp black thorns protect the plant's new blooms, illustrated with concentric circles in black, green, and red—elements that represent the spirit world and the universal life force that animates all things.

The Indigenous peoples of North America were likely the first to cultivate raspberries. Berries were eaten fresh, mashed into beverages, or added to soups and meat. They were also dried and pressed into cakes, providing an essential source of vitamins during the winter months.

The entire raspberry plant has been valued in Indigenous medicine for treating ailments such as coughs, toothaches, measles, dysentery, and digestive issues, and for maintaining women’s reproductive health. Root bark was used as an eyewash for cataracts, leaves to heal kidneys, and a decoction of root tips to purify the blood and regulate blood pressure.
